Erectile Dysfunction: Viagra and Other Oral Medicines

Erectile dysfunction can be cured through some oral medications. Read on to know all about them.

Those who face difficulty sustaining an erection can rely on erectile dysfunction medicines to treat the condition. Read on to know more about the medicines and their effectiveness.

What are the most common erectile dysfunction medicines?

Based on your pre-existing health conditions and the current medications that you take, your doctor can suggest the following medicines:

  • sildenafil (Viagra)
  • avanafil (Stendra)
  • vardenafil (Staxyn, Levitra)
  • tadalafil (Cialis)

Sildenafil (Viagra)

This medicine is the most common erectile dysfunction medicine. It works best for people with mild or moderate erectile dysfunction. It must be taken an hour before sex and remains effective for at least four hours.

Avanafil (Stendra)

Doctors suggest taking this medicine with or without food about thirty minutes before having sex. The dosage is determined per the severity of the condition, and the medication’s effect can last for at least six hours.

Vardenafil (Staxyn, Levitra)

This erectile dysfunction medicine is taken with or without food about sixty minutes before having sex. It is better not to take the medication with a high-fat meal because that impacts the

absorption rate.

Vardenafil is preferred in some mild to moderate cases because it tends to be more effective. The new form of this drug is kept on the tongue to dissolve gradually. It works even faster than the pills.

Tadalafil (Cialis)

This medication, taken with or without food one hour before having sex, remains effective for at least 36 hours. Thus, doctors usually suggest taking it in small doses daily, though a larger dosage might be necessary in some cases.

Are all erectile dysfunction medicines the same?

These medicines work similarly to one another, i.e., they relax the muscles and increase the blood flow to the penis. Therefore, holding on to an erection becomes easier rather than losing it. But the chemical makeup of every oral medication is not the same, which dictates its effectiveness and possible side effects. For instance, Sildenafil stays active for four hours, whereas the effect of Tadalafil lasts for 36 hours.

The choice of medication in case of erectile dysfunction mainly depends on the ease of use, cost, side effects, and how long the effects last. Doctors also consider any prior health conditions you have or medicines you take.

Are oral erectile dysfunction medications safe?

Erectile dysfunction medications may be dangerous for you or might not be effective at all when you:

  • have serious liver disease
  • have any kidney ailments that need dialysis
  • have hypotension (low blood pressure) or hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • take the common nitrate drugs prescribed for angina (chest pain)

Though these medicines are available at a drugstore, never have them without a doctor’s advice. Taking medications without considering the possible drug interactions and the correct dosage can be dangerous. Thus, make sure to talk to a doctor and undergo proper treatment.
