CIOB Chartered Membership Application Guidance

CIOB, the Chartered Institute of Building, is the largest and most powerful professional organization for construction management and leadership. Making a management career in this industry requires a CIOB membership.

A Professional Review is the last stage toward Chartered Membership for the majority of candidates. Its main purpose is to ensure whether you have attained the required knowledge and expertise necessary in three major areas:

  • Occupational
  • Managerial
  • Professional

When you pass your assessment, you will get the designation MCIOB and become a Chartered Member.

Necessary steps for Professional Review:

The following are the five steps for CIOB Professional Review:

  1. Experience and Academic requirements: The authority will take your application into account only if you satisfy the academic eligibility requirements. Apart from that, you need to have at least 3 years of related work experience (5 years if not having an honors degree in a built environment). To fulfill the academic eligibility criteria, you must have a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  2. Membership: The CIOB advises you to become a non-chartered member (applicant). For this, you should create an account and apply for membership if you do not yet have an account.
  3. Download the Professional Review: You need to download the application to fill up the details.
  4. Guidance notes: You have to read the guidance notes that are in the application form along with providing supporting documents. These notes will describe what to send with your application like an updated resume and CPD certificates.
  5. Verification: You must have an endorsement from your line manager and your clients. More details lie in your support materials.

Having Professional Review Chartered Membership of the CIOB will take you on the path that will take your career to the next level. Moreover, it will also help you develop yourself to attain expertise.

Using many years of study, experience, and exams will lead to Chartered Membership. Attaining this membership means attaining the designation MCIOB.

Now, as you are inching to earn your Chartered Member credential, you need to know what to demonstrate. Apart from that, you also need to provide evidence that can meet the review requirements.

Guidelines for the application:

Read the below-given guidelines before starting your application. Here, you need to know that the application has 5 main sections. Another thing to know is that completing all sections is necessary before submission.

You need to mention your career advancement and competencies in your own words. Aside from that, submit the below-given documents:

  • Holding current membership is a must before application
  • Your resume
  • Job description
  • You must have an organization chart along with your name, position, responsibilities, and reporting lines
  • CPD records for 12 months (only necessary if having been a member for more than 1 year)

Note: The authority will process your application if it is with all the required documents. In addition to that, it must be as per the guidelines above. If you miss something, then your application may have a delay. Here, you also need to ensure that your action plan is a comprehensive one with your personal and company goals.

CIOB Professional Review requirements:

A competency review can determine whether you are skilled or not. Moreover, it can also determine if you have the behavior to work as a Chartered Builder or Chartered Construction Manager. The competencies that a CIOB member has must apply across different disciplines within the industry. These competencies fall under the below-listed categories:

  • Commitment to Professionalism
  • Management Competence
  • Occupational Competence

The assessor will consider sensible and realistic choices showing the skills necessary for the role, whilst understanding your interpretation. Here, the choices you provide must be examples of your work and judgment.

Things to do:

  1. Read the candidate guidelines carefully before writing your competency report. These guidelines explain the process and what you have to include in your report.
  2. Include clear, specific, and detailed examples of your practice to show the competencies.
  3. Don’t forget to utilize ‘I did’ for the description of your experience.
  4. You can discuss the plus and minus points of your decision after each example. Besides that, explain why you did that.
  5. Those submitting superior applications will show their practice, showing how they will manage future tasks differently.
  6. Whenever possible, utilize complete sentences and paragraphs.
  7. Give an effective explanation with influential proof of your competence using all available space.
  8. Ensure that you don’t commit any grammatical or spelling mistakes. If it seems that you have not proofread your report, the PR Team will return it to you.
  9. An evaluator doesn’t look for million-pound projects. Their main purpose is to make clear that you are competent. Apart from that, they also make sure that you have a clear idea of your limits of competence and responsibilities. You also must assure the evaluator that you make ethical decisions and learn quickly to develop.
  10. Ensure that you use appropriate words and language while writing. For example, a good opener is to say something self-evident, like ‘operational safety is necessary for the organization’ or ‘planning and organization are a must for the smooth running of’.

CPD:

Your report must be proof of the continuous professional development (CPD) you have completed in the past year. It is only if you have been a member for a minimum of one year. So, don’t forget your CIOB CPD.
